Laser cold sore treatment

Dr. Daniel Stockburger now offers the latest in cold sore laser treatments at our Newport News dental practice.

Many people are affected by two common types of cold sore virus.  HSV type 1 and HSV type 2.  The virus is passed on through tiny tears in the mouth tissues.

Because these are contagious with no known cure, and they are associated with sexual activity, cold sores carry a social stigma.  HSV-1 is the usual cause of cold sores, which appear as painful lesions around the mouth. While HSV-1 presents as cold sores, the virus is actually an infection of the nervous system. HSV-1 can be controlled by antiviral medications to topical ointments.

What is HSV-1?

A person can be infected with HSV-1 yet display no symptoms.  This is often how the desease is spread.  Even if there are no cold sores, the virus can still be active and the person contagious.  Transmission can take place from kissing, sharing of items such as lip balm, eating utensils and razors.

Cold sores are not always visible, and for many there is no way to predict when cold sores will appear.  Some people can have flare-ups that are months or years apart, while for others, they can be a frequent occurrance.  Flare-ups can be caused by a weakened immune system, such as when fighing an illness, or stress.

When flare-ups occur they are disfiguring and uncomfortable, usually lasting 7-10 days.  Before a flare-up, the person usually experiences tingling in the area where the cold sore will appear, and the skin can become itchy and red.  After that blisters will form, and may burst before forming an outer crust.

Cold Sores vs Canker Sores

Canker sores affect around 20% of people.  Cold sores and canker sores are completely different, and unrelated.

Canker sores, while often mistaken for cold sores, are non-contagious ulcers that form on the soft tissues of the mouth, including cheeks, tongue and inside of the lips.  Women and young people tend to be most susceptible.  While the source of canker sores is unknown, some people have noted that ulcers appear after eating certain foods, or have expreienced a different mouth irritation.

Laser treatment for HSV-1.

Laser treatment is a new alternative to ointments and prescription medications.  As soon as you feel a cold sore forming, you can schedule an appointment with Dr. Stockburger.  Laser treatment can prevent the formation.  In an existing cold sore, the laser treatment can prevent the progress and cut down the healing time.

Laser cold sore therapy can also reduce flare-up occurrances, and in some cases clear the treated site permanently.
